THE CROW’S
NEST------------January 18,
2010
A
belated Happy New Year
to everyone! I apologize
for being SO slow in posting
a new “Crow’s Nest”. The
holidays, family visits and
travels put me way behind in
updating the website. I
think I am now ready to
spend time at the computer.
Over the holidays the
weather was bitterly cold.
The last few days we have
really enjoyed an old
fashioned “January Thaw”.
Temperatures have risen into
the 30’s so the snow has
melted off the roads and the
huge piles are sinking a
little bit. I wouldn’t mind
if the rest of the winter
was like this.
We just got back from a few
days spent in Las Vegas.
Allegiant Airline flies
non-stop from Grand Forks,
Fargo and Bismarck to Las
Vegas and also to Phoenix.
We flew out of Grand Forks
on a Sunday and came back
the following Thursday. We
had a 17th floor
corner room at the Paris
Hotel that offered us a
spectacular view of the
Bellagio’s water fountains
and the Paris’ Eiffel Tower
set against the backdrop of
Nevada’s mountainous
landscape.
We walked so much my legs
felt like jelly as each day
ended. I did enjoy the
walking, but got very
annoyed with all the
“snappers” on the streets
and the “time-share hawkers”
inside the casinos. We even
watched a turf fight between
snappers. Security quickly
quelled the disturbance. We
went to see the
ventriloquist, Terry Fator
at the Mirage. What an
outstanding show he put on.
He won the television
program, “America’s Got
Talent” a couple of years
ago—I can understand why, as
he really was good!
One
morning we drove to Hoover
Dam. What a beautiful and
awesome sight that is. It
is just a short drive from
Las Vegas and well worth the
trip. We had our tom-tom
along so it was easy to get
where we wanted to go. Just
wish Ms Tom-Tom didn’t have
such an annoying voice!
Guess I am being a little on
the snooty side. The
Fremont Street experience
and the Liberace Museum were
also fun places to visit.
Next time I want to fly to
Las Vegas and then drive to
the Grand Canyon. We lived
in Arizona for 2 ½ years and
never visited it. I am
deathly afraid of heights
and falling over edges. I
think it is time to try and
conquer this fear and visit
this wonder.
It is surprising how fast
time will go these next few
weeks. Our Community Club
is planning another
“Community Brunch” in
March. A lot of work goes
in to it, but it also is
such a fun time for those of
us involved in the planning
and preparation. We are
looking forward to this
event.
Harold and Alida Flom are
spending the winter in
Arkansas. They travel from
there to North Carolina and
Minnesota to visit their
children and grandchildren.
Harold calls occasionally to
hear how everyone is doing
in Edinburg. Everett Seim
is at home. He goes down
for blood transfusions as
they are needed. I suppose
most everyone in the area
has had their H1N1 flu shot
by now.
Anderson’s Café served
torsk and fried chicken last
Friday night. The place was
full when we were down to
enjoy the food. We eat
breakfast and lunch there
2-3 times a week also.
Marlene is known for the
great pies she makes.
Our
sympathy goes to Joann
(Hall) Swenson and family on
the death of Bernice.
Bernice’s funeral was held
in Edinburg last Monday.
She had been residing in the
twin cities for the last few
years. Bernice was such a
wonderful, caring and giving
lady. She is missed by
many.
I am on my way down to see
Barb Brandvold for a
haircut. I was going to get
one in Las Vegas but the
price at the “spa” at the
Paris was $155.00 for a cut
and I just didn’t know at
that price if I could be
assured of getting a great
haircut like Barb gives me!
Have a good day and we’ll
talk later.
