THE CROW’S
NEST--------------December
12, 2006
The
scene out my living room
window is beautiful.
Everything is covered with
frost! Do you suppose if I
stood outside for any length
of time I could become
frosty too? The
temperatures hover just at
the freezing point so it is
not a good day to be on the
roads but the breath-taking
whiteness of everything
makes the landscape a “sight
to behold”.
We really have had weather
to meet the likes and
dislikes of everyone. The
very first part of December
was really cold with real
temperatures dipping to
double digit numbers. These
past few days have seen
temperatures soaring into
the 40’s.
Christmas is just a few
days away so hope everyone
is ready. It is fun to
drive around after dark and
see the pretty Christmas
lights decorating the homes
and yards of our residents.
Last Sunday afternoon a few
of the local guys were
putting up lights on the
street poles downtown.
Bernice had Christmas music
playing outside the General
Store. She also had hot
cider for shoppers. All of
these efforts sure make for
a festive atmosphere in
Edinburg.
I was visiting with my
cousin Allen (Sorbo) this
morning when he mentioned he
and Judy had been down to
Moorhead to see the
basketball game at Concordia
last night. Their daughter,
Sara is a freshman and is on
the team. (Her picture was
even in the Fargo Forum
today!) Allen and Judy used
to travel far and wide to
attend all the sporting
events their children
participated in when they
were in high school. Those
distances were long, but
nothing like the distances
they travel now. Andrew
plays football at UND and
Sara basketball at
Concordia. They have driven
to Omaha, South Dakota,
Michigan and many places in
between to support Andrew
and Sara-----and their
teams. Go Sioux and Cobbers!
Edinburg will hold its
annual bird count Thursday,
December 21. Keep an eye
out for Janne Myrdal as she
patrols the streets of
Edinburg with her binoculars
looking for various
species. She is a die-hard
birdwatcher. The event will
begin with breakfast at 7:30
AM in “The Bird Room” at the
General Store and end with
steaming bowls of chili
later in the day—also at the
General Store.
Congratulations to Jenna
Langerud and her new baby
girl, Ava Claire. I know
there are a couple of proud
grandparents in town---John
and Paula.
I am looking forward to
Christmas with family home
to visit. Jodi (Hall)
Crockett called this morning
and thought we should all
get together and make lefse
so that doesn’t become a
lost art for her
generation. No matter how
good ours turns out, it will
never be as good as Nana’s,
but we will try our best to
make Nana Monson proud.
It was SO good to walk into
the café at noon and see
Wanda Hall sitting at a
table. Her brother, Clint
Nelson brought her up to
attend a funeral in
Cavalier. psstt---a little
secret: I knew Wanda was
there because I could smell
her Estee Lauder perfume in
the entry. Wanda, it was SO
good to see you even though
we talk very often on the
phone.
I would be very remiss if I
did not write a fond
farewell to a family that
will very much be missed in
Edinburg. Our pastor,
Pastor Erik, Jif, Leif and
Thor are moving from
Edinburg the 27th of
December. Pastor Erik
answered a call from a
parish in Portland, ND.
It is with a heavy heart
that we say good by to the
Heskins. Pastor Erik
has been so very involved in
the community with Quick
Response and especially with
our youth. His sermons
kept even my grandkids
listening. I remember
one Sunday morning when he
asked a rhetorical question.
Our grandson, Cole raised
his hand and answered Pastor
Erik's question. We
didn't have to give them
lifesavers to keep them from
fidgeting in church--Pastor
Erik's message was always
understandable for everyone.
(Only Ruthie, David and I
were given lifesavers by our
grandfather, PA!)
We will miss you very much
and God's blessings go with
you.
Merry Christmas to everyone
and will visit with you
later. I hope the
Luther Mebergs enjoyed their
overnight stay in the sod
house.
