THE CROW’S
NEST--------------OCTOBER
16, 2005
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?? It
is 11 PM and our thermometer
says it is 61 degrees
outside! We have had
beautiful weather since
“Blizzard Zach” hit North
Dakota October 5th
and 6th. We
still haven’t had a hard
freeze. Above normal
temperatures are predicted
for this coming week. Hope
the whole winter goes as
well. I have heard long
range forecasts of above
normal temperatures—that
usually indicates a good
amount of snow. Personally
I would rather have the snow
and warmer temps than the
bitter cold that seems to
penetrate deep every time I
venture outdoors.
“Blizzard Zach” hit central
North Dakota Tuesday, Oct. 4th.
It started raining and
blowing here on Wednesday
and really hit us with snow
Thursday, Oct. 6th.
I am guessing we had about 8
inches of snow. The Minot
area had about 15 inches of
snow. Many trees were
toppled by the weight of the
heavy, wet snow in that
area.
What a wonderful time we
had in Edinburg last
Thursday. A group of 40
Norwegians on a tour bus
spent the day in the area.
They visited Hall’s Potato
Complex in Hoople, toured
the Icelandic State Park,
had a noon meal at Byron’s
Bar in Mountain, spent time
at the Park River Bible
Camp, saw Odalen Lutheran
Church and listened to Doug
Langerud present a
mini-concert for their
enjoyment. They also
visited the Par Site, Vikur
Church and the Myrdal farm
by Gardar. The day ended
with a Potato Bar and Dance
at the Edinburg Community
Center. About 80 Edinburg
and surrounding area
residents came to the
Community Center to enjoy
the supper served by the
Edinburg Business Club. The
Pecka Band played polkas and
old time music for the
enjoyment of everyone. By
the time the tour bus left
to return to Grand Forks
there were tearful
good-byes. Bernice Flanagan
and Rosemarie Myrdal made
all the arrangements with
Char Brekke of Brekke Travel
Tours in Grand Forks for the
group to make this side trip
on their way to the Hostfest
in Minot. There is no doubt
Bernice is one of the
biggest promoters of our
town. Every chance she gets
she lets people know about
Edinburg and what a
wonderful place it is to
visit. Thank you both
Bernice and Rosemarie for
all the hard work you did
making this exchange of
cultures happen for a day.
I didn’t go on a tour bus,
but Chuck and I did spend
the weekend at the Hostfest
in Minot. It is such a fun
time. It is amazing all the
campers that set up on the
fairgrounds for the whole
week. We saw Paul Anka in
concert. What a showman he
is! He had a terrific show
singing all the songs I
remember from my teenage
years. Of course there were
lots of booths with
Scandinavian crafts for
sale. Every time I go I
think I should buy a
Norwegian sweater---maybe
next year. Bethany Lutheran
Church served wonderful
meatballs from their booth
in the Olso Pavilion. They
gave me seven meatballs
because I passed on the
lutefisk. I shared 5 of
them with others as there
was no way I could eat all
of those. They were good!
Adams-Edinburg-Edmore
football traveled to Towner
last Friday night for their
last regular season game.
They won 54-24. Play-offs
start this Saturday with
Edinburg playing Central
Valley Benson (Leeds) I
believe. Football fever is
running high in town.
There has been a boom in
“house fixing-up” around
town lately. Cathy
Nordquist, LeRoy & Louise
Pederson, Rose Dean, and
Elroy & Vera Brandvold all
have re-shingled their
homes. Jim and Mary Kertz
are adding on to their
home. Bill and Lynn
Nowatski’s new home is just
about completed. Does it
ever look nice! Bob and
Bonnie Halldorson are in the
process of demolishing their
house so they can move in a
new home. The residents of
Edinburg take so much pride
in their homes and the
town. No wonder visitors
are always amazed at what a
beautiful little city we
have.
The UND Fighting Sioux
football team is unbeaten in
the NCC. They beat Duluth
last Saturday 33-10. Our
own hometown guy, Andrew
Sorbo gets quite a bit
playing time with the team.
We are so proud of him and
his accomplishments. GO
SIOUX!
Teachers Convention is this
Thursday and Friday so the
kids will have a couple of
days off. Have a great day!
