THE CROW’S
NEST---------------October 6, 2008
As the song goes, “Oh,
it’s a long, long while from
May to December, but the
days grow short when you
reach September”. Well,
here it is way past
September in to the first
week of October and I am
finally getting back to
writing a new Crow’s Nest.
Time seems to fly by.
I don’t know where the time
goes---well, actually I do.
I waste so much time trying
to do something with the top
of my head! What used to be
hair has turned in to a ball
of wire that looks like it
just had an electrical
shock. I will blame it on
getting grey and
prednisone. It is painful
to look in the mirror and
try to figure out what to do
next. Enough complaining
again.
We had a touch of frost the
other night so this is
probably the end of garden
tomatoes. This truly has
been a wonderful summer. I
do not recall getting any
mosquito bites all summer
long. The nights were
perfect for sitting outside
on the deck. I will have
fond memories of summer 2008
when the snow is whipping
down the streets in
February.
The annual Norwegian Tour
Bus (and Norwegian people!)
were in Edinburg last
Thursday night for a evening
meal and dance. The group
of 50 Norwegians toured the
area all day Thursday to
include visiting the Hall
Potato facilities in
Edinburg. Ruth provided
doughnuts, caramel bars,
potato chip cookies and
coffee for them to enjoy.
The group went to the
Icelandic State Park and
various other places before
arriving back in Edinburg at
4 PM. The group seemed to
enjoy looking around
Edinburg and visiting Market
on Main and the Edinburg
General Store. At 5 PM Matt
and the Dakota Dutchmen
started playing old time
music. We served a pork
loin supper to approximately
150 people. Everyone seemed
to have a wonderful time
again this year. This is
sponsored by the Edinburg
Community Club and Brekke
Travel Tours of Grand Forks.
Trinity also had their
annual Fall Festival on
Saturday. The soup and
sandwich is always a big hit
along with the bazaar. It
was a beautiful day to make
it even better.
There is happiness in
Edinburg with the birth of
Grace Anne, the newborn
daughter of Pastor
Christopher and Pastor
Rebecca Miller. The
pictures of her show a head
full of dark, dark hair.
Congratulations to the whole
family.
Along with the happiness
comes much sadness for the
community. Julie (Langerud)
Mittet, the daughter of
Steve and Mary Langerud
passed away September 22nd.
Julie was only 39 years old
and leaves behind a husband
and 3 children ages 18, 15
and 2. Julie and family
resided in the Seattle
area. A beautiful memorial
service was held here at
Trinity a week ago. It was
a celebration of Julie’s
life as family and friends
launched balloons in to the
air in her memory.
Also, Leona Gemmill died
last week and her funeral
was this past Saturday at
Grace Free Lutheran church.
Leona always was so cheerful
and laughed so readily. As
her nephew, Ken Rud said in
an email to me, he was sure
she was playing the piano or
her accordion in heaven.
Our sympathy to Dale and the
family.
Lon Stenerson, a long time
resident of the St Thomas
and Grafton area also just
passed away. Lon grew up in
Edinburg so many of you
reading this would remember
him. Again, our sympathy to
Arlene and family.
I apologize for seeming to
end every crow’s nest with
the sad news items of the
community. Yes, we do feel
sad but have so much to be
thankful for every day
living in such a wonderful
place. Indeed, life is good
in Edinburg. Have a great
day. We’ll talk later.
