THE CROW’S
NEST-------------------October
4, 2004
Bbbbrrrrrrrrrrrr----Our
thermometer read 23 degrees
this morning. Guess it is
time to acknowledge the
passing of summer and accept
winter being “just around
the corner”. John Clapp of
Adams said his thermometer
showed 17 degrees.
We took in all the garden
vegetables a few days ago.
I am glad that was done. I
have been canning salsa,
tomato sauce and ketchup.
It makes for a very
“fragrant” household.
Vera Brandvold just returned
from England, Scotland and
France. She and her sister,
Verna had a wonderful time.
They went to London to
“visit the queen” and then
went on to Scotland to enjoy
the pastoral landscape of
that country. They traveled
the “chunnel” from England
to France to visit Paris. I
live vicariously through all
the people that travel.
It has been an exciting week
for our extended family. We
were thrilled when Halle
Faith was born September 25th
to Jodi (Hall) and Mike
Crockett. Big brother, Jase
just loves his new little
sister. Bumpa Greg and
Bumma Ruth are excited and
happy also. Needless to
say, Great-grandma’s Janice
Monson and Beverley Hall are
enjoying every minute of
this happy time.
Then to make the week more
exciting our niece, Katie
(Monson) and a friend came
home from Minneapolis for
the weekend. Katie’s friend
(Brandon) is a corporate
pilot so they flew up and
landed at the Park River
Airport. A wedding shower
was held for Ruth Wild
Saturday morning. Katie and
Ruthie live together in the
cities. There was quite a
group of young ladies up
from Minneapolis with
“roots” in this area. It
was just great fun spending
the weekend reconnecting
with family. Seems like
only yesterday our nieces
and nephews were in grade
school!
I was down at Cenex this
morning taking a survey of
what people like about the
month of October. I
cautiously approached “the
dangerous group” (as the
men’s table of coffee
drinkers is called by the
ladies). Noris Haug related
October 8th of
1959 it started to rain,
then sleet and finally
snowed. That ended all
fieldwork. Leroy Pederson
remembered it snowed 13
inches on October 10th.
John Evenson told how he and
Eunice were renting a place
by Roy Levangs as he and
Eunice were having their
home built. They were going
to check on the progress of
their home but got stuck in
snow and had to be pulled
out. John H. Johnson
remembered neighbors out
picking rocks and the
“stoneboat” getting iced in
and stayed out in the field
until the next spring.
October of 1959 brought back
many memories. I BELIEVE
THEM. John Evenson pointed
out to me the “WOMEN’S
COFFEE BOOTHS” have the
RUMORS---------the “MEN’S
COFFEE TABLE” have the
FACTS!!!!!!!!!
I just heard the local
weather and it is supposed
to get into the 70’s for the
next few days. That sounds
wonderful. It is going to
be a great week. Bye for
now.
