THE CROW’S
NEST-------------------October
1, 2006
It's hard to believe it is
already October. Winter is
just around the corner.
Today I am happy with
whatever time of the year it
is. I am free to enjoy
every season. Let me
explain: I thought for sure
I would be writing “The
Crow’s Nest” from “The Big
House”!! I was writing a
check for a purchase last
week. The sales clerk
looked at my driver’s
license and whispered ever so softly, “It’s expired”!
Well, that just can’t be. I
am SO conscientious about
everything. Sure enough, I
had been driving illegally
since last February. I
drove ever so safely home
and confessed my crime to
Chuck. We went down to
Grand Forks and I meekly
went in to the License
Bureau to meet whatever
punishment they would give
me. I was overjoyed when
the lady behind the counter
said if that was the worst
problem she would listen to
that day her day would be
wonderful. With a big smile
for the camera and a huge
sigh of relief I walked out
of the building ready to
drive with North Dakota’s
blessings for the next 4
years. Sister-in-law
Loretta and I now have
something in common!!!!
Frost was predicted and
arrived about September 20th.
We always seem to have a
frost that “upsets the apple
cart” and then it turns
beautiful again. Chuck
picked in 191 buttercup
squash so we should be ready
for the winter! I have
spent hours canning pickles
and tomatoes also. I think
my obsession with not
letting anything go to waste
hovers on a real sickness.
My fruit room is filled with
approximately 350+ jars of
dill pickles, bread and
butter pickles, beet
pickles, homemade ketchup,
salsa, and lots and lots of
tomato sauce. I also
dehydrated many tomatoes.
They are so flavorful in
casseroles and sauces.
There really is a solution
to this by not having such a
big garden. My excuse is it
is hard to down-size and our
2 sons in Kansas love “Ma’s”
dill pickles.
We are “rooting” for Jill
Mullen and Sue Mairs who
have been training for a 3
day, 60 mile walk for Breast
Cancer. The walk is Nov 3 –
5 and is held in Phoenix,
AZ. Sue said she has walked
over 700 miles and gone
through 3 pairs of shoes
training for the event.
Both Sue and Jill have been
getting monetary support for
the walk. I really admire
them for this very
worthwhile undertaking and
wish them the best in
completing the walk.
The 31st Annual
Lutefisk Dinner at the Park
River Bible Camp is just a
memory now, but Chuck and I
still smell like dead fish.
Just kidding. We put in a 4
½ hour shift of cutting up
the lutefisk before it was
put in the boilers. The
dinner was a huge success
once again with about 1100
people enjoying the meal.
David and Loretta Monson
have everything ready for
the Sod House to be built.
The first day of work is
October 14th.
Loretta is preparing an 8 AM
breakfast for all the
volunteers before they start
cutting and hauling sod to
the site in Edinburg. The
next Saturday, Oct 21st,
building of the house will
begin. This is such a fun
project and interest is
really high. Even people
from out of this immediate
area want to come and help.
Joe Holm has designed a
cutter for the sod with
Harold Flom’s help. Loretta
said they were going to try
it out next Sunday to make
sure everything would work
smoothly.
Larry Pewe is officially
retired from the elevator in
town. They had a party for
Larry and Carol last
Saturday night at the
Community Center. Larry
will now have lots of time
for fishing and going to the
casino with Carol. We wish
them well and know they will
both enjoy the retired life.
Harold and Alida Flom are
in North Carolina visiting
their son. Olga Rheaume now
is in the Good Samaritan
Home in Park River. Olga
fell and broke her hip
recently. Lyle and Gail
Gestson are here from
Washington to be with Olga.
Sympathy goes to John and
Carol Bjornson and Richard
and Mary Wild on the death
of John and Mary’s brother
David. You all are in our
thoughts and prayers.
Have a great week and the
street lights in Edinburg “ROCK”!
Talk to you later.
