 The Crow's Nest

THE CROW’S NEST-----------September 19, 2009

SUMMER HAS ARRIVED IN EDINBURG!!!!!!  Wow, we are experiencing absolutely beautiful, warm weather.  I can almost watch my tomatoes ripen.  The temperatures have been in the 80’s during the day and in the high 50’s at night.  What more could we ask for?  I guess we waited long enough for warm summer weather.  The forecast is for it to continue in to the weekend.   LOVE IT!!!

I mentioned to Chuck the other day that we have had very few grain trucks go by the house.  Usually at this time of the year farmers are busily hauling their grain to the elevators.  Not so this year.  I visited with Dave Ramsey (the manager of the elevator in town) the other day and he said harvest has really been slow-----and late!!  To the west of us there were lots of fields that never even got planted last spring.  I know my cousin Allen Sorbo had fields he never could get into to plant.

All the kids are back in school.  Changes are coming to many schools in the area.  Consolidations will most likely have to take place as student numbers dwindle.  It makes me sad as truly there is no better place to live than in a small community such as Edinburg.  Edinburg no longer has a football program.  Two Edinburg students, Jeremy Ulvog and Tyson Holm are playing with the Park River-Fordville-Lankin team.  In fact, I read in the Walsh County Record that Jeremy was quarterback for their game last week.  Students have to travel far and wide now to play sports.  This still is a great place to live.

This past Wednesday we had our annual Turkey Supper at Trinity Lutheran Church.  We served somewhere in the vicinity of 480 people.  That number of people coming to eat warms the hearts of all of us who prepare the food.  It makes us happy to think that everyone enjoys “our” turkey supper!!!  It is amazing as people come from a 30 – 40 mile radius just to enjoy a turkey supper with all the trimmings.  It takes a lot of HARD WORK and LONG HOURS to make this happen.  There are so few of us and each year we are getting older!!  In the end everyone pulls together and helps make this a huge success.

I am so thankful for those that spend long hours getting everything prepared.  I want to acknowledge Ruth Hall, (my sister), Dorothy Hall, Katie Hall and husband Chuck for many, many hours of work put into the preparation.  There are so many that truly help out in every way.  I do not want to start naming everyone who helped as I will leave someone out---just suffice to say it “takes a church family” to make this a success.  I write as if I was chairman of the supper.  I AM NOT, but I am a person who keeps notes and makes lists of everything.  By virtue of these habits I kind of fall in to the “take charge” category.

O yes, WE ALL are in anticipation of the birth of Katie and TJ Hall’s baby.  I thought after all the work Katie did for the turkey supper she would surely go in to labor!  Each day we decide if she has “dropped” at all.  This is just not Katie and TJ’s baby; this is “Edinburg’s baby”!!!!!!!!!  Katie is due in just a few days.  Katie, you are dearly loved by everyone!

Cheryl and Glenna (Lee) have be here visiting with their mom, Julia.  It has been fun to see them walking around town in the morning and to visit with them.

Mary Burkett and Delores Geir’s sister, Dorothy Plett is here visiting.  She lives in the Phoenix, Arizona area.  I watch Mary, Delores and Dorothy walk Mary’s dog, Sally around town.  I know they are having a great time.  Mary says she has one more sister that is also coming to visit so we have to watch out when all FOUR are in Edinburg.

Chuck and I are celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary today.  It seems like only yesterday I was walking down the aisle at Odalen.  What a wonderful life we have experienced even with the separations of Chuck’s 3 tours in Viet Nam as a pilot.  We have 3 wonderful children and 6 fantastic grand children.  What more could one want!

Hope all is well with everyone and we will most definitely talk later.

 How Come?

1.  If an orange is orange, why isn't a lime called green and a lemon called yellow?

  2.  If Jimmy cracks corn and   no one cares, why does he keep doing it?

3.  If soap is used to make you clean why does it leave a scum?

4.  If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

5.  If quitters never win, andwinners never quit, who came up with "quit while you're ahead".
