HARVEST
TIME! You can smell it in
the air! Grain trucks roll
by our house on the way to
the elevator with full loads
of wheat and barley. Grain
dust hangs in the air as Bob
Kertz is combining just west
of town. Today temperatures
hover around the 85 degree
mark. There is something so
comforting and familiar with
this scenario. This is what
late summer is all about in
North Dakota. It is a
wonderful time of the year.
Trinity Lutheran Church
held it’s annual Fall Turkey
Supper last Wednesday
night. Trinity holds the
“first” supper of the year
in the area so there is
always a good attendance.
Turkey with all the
trimmings was served to 500
people. People come from a
50 mile radius to enjoy the
supper. It takes many, many
hours and many volunteers to
make this supper a success.
Unfortunately all of us
workers are getting older
each year so the task of
preparation and serving seem
just a little harder.
School is in full swing.
The Junior High Football
team has won 2 games in a
row. Pastor Erik coaches
them. He has had lots of
enthusiasm Sunday mornings
after the team has won and
has asked for prayers for
the team. I think they were
heard. I am sure the boys
are thrilled with each win.
Wish I could be as
enthusiastic about my
garden. The cool summer has
not helped produce an
abundance of vegetables. I
am getting some canning
done, but not as much as I
would like to. We had an
early August frost so the
County Extension Office has
recommended not canning
tomatoes. It will be okay
to freeze tomato sauces and
such.
I know autumn is just
around the corner as the
leaves are beginning to turn
in the coulees. It is a
beautiful time of the year.
Another sure sign of autumn
is the upcoming Lutefisk
Dinner out at the Park River
Bible Camp. For years I
have spent 3 hours dishing
up the “smelly stuff” for
the waiters and waitresses.
I am not a fan of lutefisk
but on that Sunday I am way
outnumbered by the throngs
of people that come to dine
on the delicacy. It seems
it takes almost a week for
me to get the lutefisk odor
out of my skin.
Finally the orioles have
left for their southern
migration. The last couple
of weeks the wasps were also
enjoying the grape jelly
with the orioles. We still
have hummingbirds, but I
expect they will leave very
soon also.
Edinburg’s heart has been
very heavy since the first
of September. Louise and
Leroy Pederson’s son Steven
died at the young age of
42. It was very unexpected
and saddened everyone in the
community. Our hearts, love
and prayers are with all of
the Pederson family.
I will write again later.
Have a wonderful day.
