THE CROW’S
NEST-----------September 15, 2008
Go ahead, take a deep
breath. Does that wonderful
aroma waft around you? Does
your sense of smell wish for
just a little sample? Yes,
yesterday Chuck and I spent
4½ hours cutting and packing
lutefisk for the 34th
annual Park River Bible Camp
Lutefisk and Meatball
Dinner. We have quite an
assembly line. We cut the
fish, and then Joe Holm (who
by the way is 82 years
young) and Clair Kroke (from
Fordville) cook it in big
boilers. Bennie Langerud
makes sure the lutefisk is
cooked properly. Loretta (Windingland)
and Noel Moe oversee the
whole operation. Another
group comes in for the 2nd
shift. My skin permeates
with that smell for at least
a week.
This past week we had our
annual Turkey Supper at
Trinity. Once again it was
a huge success. We served
about 500 people. We had
250 take-out orders. Did
that ever make for a hectic
time at the north end of the
church where they are
prepared. It was a
beautiful day and people
came from all around the
region. It was so much fun
to have Wanda Hall come from
Moorhead. Sandee Nelson
(Wanda’s sister-in-law)
brought Wanda and her
friend, Levoyne Littlefield
up to enjoy the supper.
Both Wanda and Levoyne
reside at Eventide in
Moorhead.
The hummingbirds have been
on a feeding frenzy these
last few weeks getting ready
for their southern
migration. It has been hard
to keep sugar water in their
feeders. I know this is
another sign of the changing
season. All I want is ONE
MORE beautiful evening where
we can sit on the deck and
eat our dinner. Tomorrow
may bring that request as it
is supposed to get in to the
80 degree range.
Potato harvest is in full
swing. There is lots of
activity down by the Hall
potato houses. I understand
this is one of the best
crops in the last 10 years.
We had a major power outage
last week and it was amazing
to see the long line of
trucks waiting for power so
they could unload. There is
nothing better than new
potatoes fresh from the
soil.
Edinburg School had
homecoming last weekend.
Congratulations to Amber
Nordquist and Colton Evenson
on being crowned homecoming
queen and king. I know it
was a fun week for all the
students.
It is hard to see all the
devastation from hurricanes
Gustav and Ike. I remember
living in Virginia when
hurricane Amelia hit the
eastern coast back in the
early 70’s. We were just on
the fringe of it, but did
receive 11 inches of rain
with gusty winds. Being
caught in such a weakened
storm makes me shudder to
think what being in the
full-blown hurricane must be
like. My heart and prayers
go out to all those who have
lost their homes and
everything these past few
days.
I hope everyone is enjoying
these waning days of
summer. As my tee-shirt
says: “LIFE IS GOOD”. Talk
with you later.
