THE CROW’S
NEST---------------AUGUST
17, 2005
Whew! What an early
morning we had in Edinburg.
Lightening and thunder
“rolled” in about 4:10 AM.
Shortly thereafter the rain
came in a downpour. Of
course the “icing on the
cake” was a yard full of M&M
sized hail. Everything was
white. It looked like it
was the middle of winter
outside. The hail pounding
on our skylights in the
bathroom and kitchen added
to the awesome power of
Mother Nature’s
capabilities. We had about
5 inches of rain by 10 AM.
This system is not over yet
as there are storm and flash
flood warnings crawling
across the television screen
constantly.
This could mean the end to
our garden. Chuck put on
his boots and went to pick
cucumbers this afternoon.
He came back with a 5 gallon
pail full. He said it
wasn’t hard to find the
cukes as the plants were
minus most of their leaves.
I had planned to pick last
night so I could make dill
pickles this morning.
Procrastination is still one
of my big faults. I hope
some of the tomatoes will
make it through this little
setback. I pray this storm
has not damaged the grain
crops.
There were lots of
basements with water seepage
this morning. The ball
diamond looks like a lake
and the ditch just outside
of town to the west is full
of water. You know, the
good thing about this storm
is it sure gave everyone
around town something to
talk about today.
Last time I wrote our 2
sons were home helping to
reside the house. This past
weekend Chuck’s brother and
family from Bismarck and
Chuck’s sister and husband
from Brainerd came to help.
It sure is nice to have
relatives that offer their
services. Three sides of
the house are
completed---only the north
side left. That will be a
slow side as there are many
windows, electrical outlets,
etc. to cut around. It will
be good when it is finished.
The Cook Book Committee met
this afternoon at Trinity
Lutheran Church. We are
going to have a new cookbook
out in the not too distant
future. The old Trinity
Cook Book was published in
1969—with an addition to it
in 1982. It is amazing how
frequently ladies in town
are asked if that cookbook
is still available to buy.
Loretta Monson and Vera
Brandvold have put in lots
of hours spearheading this
project. Jan Nygard was at
the meeting and reported
they had a wonderful time in
Norway.
Fall is most definitely in
the air. Agnes Bjerke has a
tree in her yard turning
color all ready and I have
had a couple of crickets in
my basement sewing area. I
kind of enjoy the sound of
the cricket---except at 3
AM. I go outside and can
just “smell” autumn.
School starts next week and
football practice has been
held for the last couple of
weeks. The kids I have
talked with seem to be
anxious to get back in to a
routine again. It won’t be
long before I will hear the
roar of the crowd during
Friday night football games
again.
Please take time to read
the “Dear Citizens and
Friends” letter on the
homepage. We are
undertaking quite a project
for our town. Hopefully it
will be supported as we try
very hard to keep Edinburg a
town everyone likes to visit
or “come home to”!
To close: I truly am
becoming my mother and
father’s daughter. I find
myself tuning in to Lawrence
Welk every Sunday night.
Not only that, I look
forward to watching Daniel
O’Donnell on PBS! Have a
great day!
