 The Crow's Nest

THE CROW’S NEST-----------------April 29,  2010

Spring must be here as I listen and watch a parade of tractors pulling cultivators, discs and seeders through and around town to the various surrounding fields.  It really is such a great noise as you know warm weather and new growth is “just around the corner”.  The farmers are about a month ahead of planting from last year.  I don’t know if that is good or bad: just know it is a statistic.   We have experienced a few days of wonderful, warm weather.  In fact, I wrote in my daily journal on Friday, April 23rd we had our first al fresco meal.  I fixed scallops on the grill and it was a glorious evening weather wise.   A few nights before the 23rd was gorgeous also as we drove around town in our golf cart.

It is probably hard for some who read this page to understand how everyone looks forward to spring and the warmth it brings.  Winter is long and cold and our summers seem so short (I attribute that to everyone planning too many events so we don’t have time to enjoy the season).  Autumn appears way too fast.

Everyone should have been here yesterday.  We had wind, wind, wind.  Gusts were up to 50 MPH!  It was not a fun day to be outside.  Thankfully the temperatures were in the 50’s.  Today it is calm and rainy.  The rain is very welcome.

We have watched lots of geese fly overhead on their northern migration.  Now it is time to prepare for the orioles and the hummingbirds to return.  I have already started making grape jelly for the orioles.  There are days when they go through a whole pint of jelly!  It is crazy.

Edinburg High School along with Valley High School had their prom last weekend in Crystal.  Edinburg and Valley will be joining next year with the consolidation.  I did not get any pictures to post.  I am told there are many on “FACEBOOK”----if interested.  I HAVE posted a couple of new pictures on the Education page.  I have refrained from putting pictures of the school kids on the website because of all the “goofy” people who take advantage of such pictures and names.  It makes me so disgusted knowing that I need to think long and hard before I post pictures of our youth and their accomplishments.  It gets very discouraging.

I wish I had a great story to tell about a happening in Edinburg---I don’t!  Life just seems to go on and everyone seems to be happy and content.  I want to let everyone know that David and Loretta Monson will be grandparents again as their daughter, Katie and husband Scott are expecting a baby in September.  Our family is excited!!  Chad and Jana (Brandvold) Gudmundson are also expecting a 2nd child in October.  How exciting for everyone.  Newborns aside----I have been asked one more time---to “teen sit” our grandson, Lane as his folks go to Maui over Labor Day.  I find this very comforting as this is probably the last time I will do something like this!  All of our grandkids are now almost grown up (three in college) and 3 in high school.  Where does the time go???

David and Loretta are almost ready to move in to Edinburg.  They purchased Wanda Hall’s home and have been busy remodeling it.  It will be wonderful to have both my brother and my sister residing in a 2-block area.  Just think how much togetherness we will have????  All kidding aside, it will be so much fun to have Dave and Loretta just around the corner from both Ruthie and myself.  How many sisters and brother live in a 2 block radius of each other?

Jim Otto is hospitalized at Altru with an infection.  We sure wish him well and a speedy recovery.  Our sympathy goes to the family of Erma Brevik, who died last week.  Today we offer sympathy to Dennis and Mavis Hogfoss and family on the death of Mavis’ mother, Marion Wylie.  Her funeral was held today this morning at Trinity.  Marion had been living in Grand Forks for the last few years.  She was 93 years old.

What surprises I had this morning!  Julie (Wallum) Pierce was “steered” by Barb Anderson (from Market On Main) to go up to the church if she wanted to see people.  Julie and a friend were here from Seattle for a college graduation.  I don’t remember when I last saw her.  We had a mini-reunion.  I also saw Lois (Solberg) Kovarik.  Lois was a classmate of Mavis and me.  She lives close to Whitman, ND, but I don’t think I had seen her since we graduated 48 years ago.  Rose Adele Sigurdson, Lois and I had a good visit over lunch following Marion’s funeral.

I have been having many issues with this website.  The plans are to revamp the whole site and freshen it up.  The site is so old that pages are being “pirated” making it often hard for me to get into the WebPages.  I hope we will soon have the whole Edinburg site problem free.

Have a great day and we will visit later.

April 29, 2010

With Mother's Day around the corner, here are a few excerpts from a book I received many years ago entitled:

"THINGS YOUR MOTHER TOLD YOU BUT YOU DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR"

1.  Mothers are not for leaning on but to make leaning unnecessary.

2.  If God had wanted us to be permissive, He would have given us the Ten Suggestions.

3. A friend is one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.

4.  Tact is the ability to close your mouth before someone else does it for you.

5.  Look for a mate who will calm the turbulence in your soul rather than challenge it to battle.

6.  The father is the head of the house.  The mother is the heart of the house.

7.  The only two lasting bequests we can give our children:  One is roots, the other wings.
