THE CROW’S
NEST--------------------April
11, 2008
How can I go from a very
“Rocky Mountain High” moment
to a “Down in the Depths of
the Grand Canyon” feeling in
a span of 4 days? Let me
tell you, it wasn’t hard.
Last Monday night I watched
my favorite college
basketball team, the Kansas
Jayhawks win the NCAA
tournament to become the
champions. They beat the
Memphis Tigers 75 – 68 in
overtime. It was a nail
biter. I didn’t sleep most
of the night I was so
excited. Last night sent me
in a tailspin as our own UND
Fighting Sioux hockey team
went down in defeat to
Boston College, 6 – 1. The
game was a heartbreaker. I
didn’t even want to read the
Grand Forks Herald this
morning as I knew what the
headlines would say. I
guess I’ll take a deep
breath and look forward to
college sports next fall.
I am sure some people up
and down the valley are
wondering if spring will
ever come to the area. The
southern part of the valley
has been hit by 2 snowstorms
in the last week.
Considerable amounts of snow
have piled up in some areas
of the Dakotas and
Minnesota. I know spring
must soon be here as
daffodils and tulips are
trying to peek through the
ground and a few hardy souls
have been out walking or
driving their golf carts
around town. The biggest
sign that spring will soon
arrive is the fact that my
toenails need polish. Last
year’s paint has grown out.
I can’t imagine wearing
sandals without pink
toenails!!
Last week at this time
Grand Forks was buzzing with
visits from Barrack Obama
and Hillary Clinton. I
watched on television all
the excitement rippling
through the crowds at the
Alerus Center. Obama got
the crowd’s attention by
using the phrase “uffda”.
Hillary likewise resonated
with everyone speaking about
the flood of 97. This
really was a great day in
North Dakota.
Besides the political
presence in Grand Forks, the
Men’s World Curling
Championships also started
the same day. Teams from
the USA, Scotland,
Switzerland, Germany,
Canada, Sweden, Austrailia,
Denmark, China, France,
Czech, and Norway descended
on the Engelstad Arena. The
Grand Forks Herald has
articles everyday about this
world-wide event.
This Sunday is the
Community Benefit for
Brandon Kartes. He will be
having surgery in May to
have his legs straightened.
Brandon is one special 13
year old. Even though
Brandon can not see, his
other senses more than take
over and serve him with such
remarkable abilities and
finesse. I especially love
to listen to Brandon sing
with the Sunday School at
church. Brandon is the son
of Chuck and Suzy Kartes.
Welcome home Bill and
Janice Loftus who recently
returned from Arizona.
Beverley Hall just came back
from Boise where she spent
time with daughter, Connie
and family. Ruth and Greg
Hall also returned from 2
weeks in Palm Desert, CA
where they enjoyed the warm
sunshine. Glad you all are
home once again.
Have a great day and we
will visit soon.
