Rebirth and Renewal

continued from front page.... Does this mean Spring is truly on its way to the GREAT DIVIDE we call Edinburg?  I sure am hopeful.  The air smells like rebirth and renewal—like something brand new.

It is also a time of new things in Edinburg with the “birth” of our new website.  Lots of planning and discussing went into its inception.  I hope everyone will enjoy keeping up with local happenings through this site.

All the snow is gone and the farmers are getting ready for spring planting.  I was down at the local elevator bending Larry’s (the manager) ear asking him what was the “crop of choice” this year.  He thought it would be soybeans.  He said prices were up and there is a demand for them.  Larry thought canola planting would be almost non-existent this year.  He wasn’t sure about sunflowers and wheat.

Also was visiting with TJ Hall last night.  He has been busy using satellite imaging to help determine proper fertilizer application for their beet and potato fields.  It is mind boggling to try and understand how far technology has come in even the last 10 years.  It was so fascinating to talk with TJ and learn from him.  You need that “cutting edge” technology to be a successful farmer these days.  Anyway, I wish for the best crops, favorable growing conditions and high prices for this coming growing and harvest season.

There is lots going on in our little town.  The high school had its prom last weekend.  They co-opt with Adams and Edmore Schools.  There were about 75 couples in attendance.  The music department is now in full swing with its competitions and concerts.  It won’t be long until graduation.  I have all my garden seeds sitting out ready to go into the ground as soon as possible.  I get a little jealous as Cliff Hilde has a cucumber plant in his house with blossoms on it!!  Won’t be long before the grass will green up and the leaves are visible on the trees.  Springtime in this corner of the world is beautiful.  There are SO many colors of green.

David Monson has named Edinburg the “Great Divide”.  I did a little research and we really are the great divide.  The fertile “Red River Valley” is to the east of Edinburg by just a few miles.  The “Prairie Drift” is 6 miles to the west of Edinburg.  This drift rises from 200 to 2000 feet over the Red River Valley.  Everyone that knows David also knows he would have something to add along with “The Great Divide”.  His theory is everyone to the east of Edinburg says “UFFDA” and everyone to the west says, “YE HAW”.  Must be the early office hours he keeps that gets his mind working a little “off-kilter”.

Our friend, Rosemary Denault just left for Germany to spend 3 weeks with her daughter and son-in-law who are stationed with the military near Kaiserslautern.  Rosemary has been very active in helping to get this website together.  I know she is having a wonderful time over the pond.  I can just taste the weiner schnitzel she is eating.

Have a great week and will write again soon. .
