The Crow's Nest - July 24, 2015

Summer weather is officially here.  How do I know that?  Because I have turned the air conditioner on for the last 4 days;   and anyone who knows me knows I hate air conditioning!  The two of us are not on friendly terms at all.  I feel so cooped up when all the doors and windows are shut.  We only experience summer weather for about 3 months so I want to enjoy it to the hilt.  I love listening to the bird’s sing, traffic driving by and all the other sounds that are associated with the outdoors.  On the other hand, I know it is not fair for Chuck, house guests and visitors to suffer inside our home when the inside thermometer hits into the high 80’s.

The Rib-Fest in town last weekend was a huge success.  The serving line started at the kiosk near the playground and wound almost all the way to the southwest entrance to the park.  Shane Johnson’s fiancée (I apologize for not knowing her name) took first place.  DuWayne Pewe & Melissa Pritchett took second and Brian & Jill Troftgruben took home third place.  I know everyone had a grand time.

I am sure everyone will agree with me:  What you see on Facebook must be true.  Well, a couple of weeks ago someone posted a formula for sloughing dead skin off your feet.  Hhmm, that looked interesting so I thought I should try it to see if it actually worked or not.  The recipe called for 1 part Listerine and 1part vinegar to 2 parts warm water.  I mixed the concoction up, soaked my feet for 10 minutes and guess what?  It actually worked great!  I would love to submerge my whole body in this, but I probably would use every bottle of Listerine from here to Grand Forks to accomplish the mission.

David and Loretta Monson had their whole family home this past week.  John, Christina, Madelyn and Olivia came from Reno, NV, Scott, Katie, Axel and Greta came from Minneapolis and Paul was home from Fargo.   Last Tuesday night they hosted a “Pizza Showdown” in the Monson yard.  John & Loretta each made pizza on the grill and about 30 plus people came by for a taste and a chance to vote on their favorite.  Loretta did a “victory” dance when she won.  It really was a fun time for everyone.

I know I say the same thing every year, but once again gardens are laden with the most wonderful and freshest produce.  It really is hard to decide what vegetables to eat each night.  They all taste so good.  I had my first tomato last night and that practically sent me into orbit.  It was SO delicious.  I think tonight it will be broccoli and beets, plus the mandatory cucumbers.  I look forward to sitting on the patio savoring the taste of everything, knowing it was raised in our garden.

Congratulations to Andrew and Kayla Sorbo on the birth of their twin sons, Axel Curtis and Oliver Michael.  They both were over 6 pounds and to me they are the spitting image of Andrew – down to the red hair and eye lashes.  Big sisters Sophia and Hadley seem to really enjoy these two new additions.  Kayla has posted darling pictures of the family.

Elmer Pederson called the other morning to let Chuck know that he was spending a few weeks in a nursing home in Minneapolis.  He contracted a blood infection and was in the hospital.  He says he will stay in the nursing home until he has fully recovered.  I know this is hard for Elmer as he has a huge garden in Edinburg and spends a lot of the summer here taking care of it.  I wish him a speedy recovery.

Our resident traveler, Vera Brandvold is in Greece along with her sister Verna Severson.  I know she is having a wonderful time.

Happy birthday to grandson Cole and brother Dave.  Have a great day and we will talk later.

1. Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?

2. Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They both are dogs.

3. If corn oil is made from corn and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made of?

4. Do the Alphabet Song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same melody?

5. Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

Loretta Monson does a "happy" dance after being declared the winner of the Monson Pizza Cook-off.
