THE CROW’S
NEST------------------January
28, 2007
I
am looking out my office
window at home and
snowflakes are floating to
the ground. It makes for a
cozy way to spend a Sunday
afternoon after a weekend of
excitement watching our
“Fighting Sioux” hockey team
sweep the Minnesota Gophers
down in the Twin Cities.
They were fun games to watch
on television---especially
with the final outcome being
in favor of the Sioux. UND
has only 2 more weekends
scheduled with games in
Grand Forks. “The Ralph” (Engelstad
Arena) is a beautiful
facility to watch and enjoy
not only hockey, but other
events that are scheduled
there. My dear husband
keeps offering to give me
the opportunity to ride on
one of the Zamboni’s between
periods, but I haven’t
jumped at the chance yet.
One of our grandson’s rode a
couple of years ago. Boy, I
remember going to UND hockey
games in the “Old Barn”
where there was no heat and
you stood to watch. We sure
have it cushier now with our
season tickets. O yes, I do
get invited back to play
with the UND band also. I
don’t think I could hold a
big baritone horn and cheer
at the same time.
“Market on Main” is the
place to be on a Saturday.
My goodness for the activity
at the store yesterday.
They had a tasting party
with marinated flank steak
and a couple of appetizer
dips for customers to
sample. David Hilde has
been busy this past week
installing new flooring.
I’m going to miss the
character of the old floor
that slanted and squeaked a
little. I remember the
floor tilting ever so
slightly even as a little
girl when Hoot Johnson would
put sawdust on the wooden
planks each evening before
it was swept. TJ and Fred
have also put new paneling
on the walls throughout the
inside. The many changes in
the store look so nice and
add so much to the
interior. One thing that
hasn’t and isn’t changing is
the quality meats Jarrod
provides for customers. He
is so willing to accommodate
everyone’s wishes. Smoked
salmon has been added to the
meat case. Ruthie has also
added her much loved egg
rolls again. They sell out
faster than she can keep
them in stock. I know I
scarfed some up and stashed
them in my freezer.
Sara Sorbo is busy playing
basketball again this
winter. This time she plays
for Concordia College in
Moorhead. She is having an
outstanding season. I have
seen highlights of Concordia
games a few times on TV
where they have talked with
Sara. She not only plays
great ball but is wonderful
during interviews. I know I
am one of many who want to
claim her for Edinburg.
Allen and Judy really put
the miles on getting to most
of her games.
Bernice Flanagan has done
it again! She is the best
promoter for our little
town. Professor Emeritus
Jerome Tweten of UND
presented a program entitled
“The Saga of the Sod Buster”
last Wednesday in Grafton.
Bernice called around and
found 35 people who went
down to hear him speak.
Bernice lined up
transportation with the use
of a school bus. Edinburg
was recognized at the event
for building a sod house.
Everyone had a great time.
Thank you Bernice for all
you do for Edinburg.
It
won’t be long until St
Patrick’s Day comes along.
We had so much fun last year
that we are going to do it
again this year. What you
ask? We are going to have a
Business Club sponsored
Irish Dinner and
Dance----the dance will be
polka and old time music.
Maybe we can squeeze in an
Irish Jig somewhere during
the evening.
I remember growing up in
Edinburg during the time
dancing just wasn’t
permissible. Once in a
while after Community Club
we would “Bunny Hop” around
the Hall while the song
“Muskrat Ramble” was being
played somewhere within the
building. That was as close
to dancing as we got! All
of these memories flood back
because of the pictures that
are spread out throughout my
home. Loretta (Monson) made
many telephone calls asking
for pictures so looking
through the myriads of
photos has been a very
nostalgic trip. I wish
everyone could experience
what fun this has been.
Bud and Lynette Langerud
are on vacation somewhere
down south. Lynette said
they were flying into Las
Vegas and then would rent a
car and see which way the
wind took them. That is the
way to travel.
Greg Hall is on the mend
after surgery on his arm
this past week. Ruthie said
he is supposed to take
things slow. I know that is
a tough assignment for Greg.
Hope everyone has a great
week and we’ll chat at a
later time. Thanks Susie
for checking in all the time
– and your frosting recipe
was great!
